Prokofiev Sonata 8 - Free MP3

January 16th, 2008

The eight piano Sonata composed by Sergei Prokofiev in B-flat Major is composed of 3 movements:

1. Andante dolce
2. Andante sognante
3. Vivace

It’s the 8th of the 9 piano Sonatas that Sergei Prokofiev wrote. Unfortunately the tenth piano Sonata he was writing was never completed.

This 8th piano Sonata was composed in the period between 1939 and 1944, starting in the same period as Prokofiev’s sixth and seventh piano Sonatas. All three sonatas are signed by the dark years of the war. The 8th Sonata was completed in 1944 and first performed on 30th December that year in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory by the young pianist Emil Gilels.

Although not as popular as the Sixth and Seventh, the Eighth Sonata stands as perhaps the greatest of the cycle. Richter called it “the richest of all of Prokofiev’s sonatas. It has a complex inner life with profound contrapositions.”

Prokofiev made use of themes sketched in 1939, presumably associated with his first meeting with the woman to whom the work is dedicated : Mira Mendelsohn, who became Prokofiev’s second wife years later.

Jeux d’eau a Villa d’Este - Liszt

November 21st, 2007

As I have missed my flight saturday morning we decided I would use the unplanned extra time won to do some experiments with the new ZOOM H4 (a microphone and recorder all-in-one) I have bought just 1 week ago.

This is the result. A bit unsatisfying, the microphone was too close to the piano, but still I think we’ll be able to do great stuff with this toy.

And regarding Marina playing Liszt’s Jeux d’eau à Villa d’Este, what can I say, it was as always a joy for me to listen and record her music. I hope you can enjoy as much as I have been able to catch with the new microphone.

Free MP3 Debussy

October 21st, 2007

This page used to contains free MP3 files of Marina playing Debussy stuff like the Prélude and Sarabande of Pour le piano, the three poetic Images (second album), The wattery Jardins sous la pluie and the funny Petit Nègre.

I removed those MP3 files now, not because they had to be removed for any reason like copy right problems or so, no no, they will come back soon, and in fact some of these MP3 files are yet on this site, but as I reorganized the site with specific categories and podcasts, it turned out not to work well by putting them all on one page.

So soon there will be new pages and new links to MP3 files, links and videos of Marina playing Debussy, or maybe they are even there yet!

I’m also adding the possibility to get the MP3 files directly in your iTunes (see in the right column). The purpose is to have one Podcast for each category, so you will have one Podcast for Debussy, one Podcast for Lizst, one Podcast for Beethoven and so on.

I will probably also make one general Podcast with all audio together…. not sure, we’ll see how that turns out.

One thing is sure, this is taking more time than planned, so please be patient.
